Computer and Sound Card

The current software has only been tested on Widows 95/98/Me/XP operating systems.

  • Connect a headset and microphone to your computer sound card. Deactivate your external speakers to avoid feedback.
  • Bring up Windows((95/98/Me/XP).
    • Go to “Start, Settings, Control Panel, Multimedia, Multimedia Properties, Audio” tab.
    • Place a check mark in “Show volume control on the taskbar”.
    • Click on the “Playback” icon. Set the “Volume” slider to about 25% above the minimum level. Do not check any “Mute” boxes.
    • Click on the “Recording” icon. Set  the “Microphone Volume” slider to about 25% above the minimum level. Make sure the microphone is the selected audio input for Recording.
  • IMPORTANT: Make sure there is ONE and only ONE input enabled for recording. Check all sources both on the recording side and playback side, since many sound cards have microphone and loopback capabilities on both sides. The objective is to eliminate or at least minimize the internal audio feedthrough possible within your computer and with MetMeeting. The “junk” caused by this feedthrough really sounds bad on the transmit end.  Make sure you monitor the final results by performing the Audio Loopback testing .

Downloading and Installing the Control Software

    • Access the W4MQ download website at
    • http://www.n2jeu.net/system/files/webtransceiver6000.exe
    • Install the program do not start yet first install the program update at:
    • Register with K1AJD by sending a email to tony at k1ajd.net.
    • Download the WebXCVR control code from the download website. This can be saved in any directory on your computer. The installation will create the correct directory structure for operation. With a 56000 bps modem it will take between 13 to 18 minutes to download the full 4 MByte package required for initial loading. Note that updates are much smaller and take significatgnly less time to download. When the file is downloaded, access that file using Windows Explorer, double click on that file and follow the instructions to expand that file into its components and complete the installation process. The resulting files will be placed automatically in a new folder named “C:\Program Files\W4MQ\WebTransceiver”. In addition, on your Program menu you will  now find “W4MQ” added which includes a shortcut to the  “Web Transceiver”. For additional convenience you may place a shortcut icon on your “Desktop”.
